Do you know women are using their Period Blood as a Face Mask?

OMG! WHAT! Yes pretty much like that was my first reaction when I read about it. It popped up in my Pinterest Feed where it was written, “I tried a period blood face mask for the first time and the results were shocking.” It took me 30 sec to realize that she actually applied her menstrual blood on her face as a face mask. It was then I decided to dig more about it, and if or not this really does benefit the skin or is just a myth that is getting carried on.

Whether or not period blood has any benefits for the skin?

It is mentioned in many of the articles that I read over the internet that Period Blood itself contains a lot of stem cells and is incredibly rich in nutrients like zinc, copper, magnesium, etc. All of these elements are also found in some of the cosmetic products. But, I won’t claim that it’s true or not. Since it is said that the stem cells are present in the egg that our ovaries produce and not the blood. However, it’s the uterus lining that sheds every month so the blood might contain some amount of stem cells.

It’s not also sure whether or not the period blood is completely pure or not. Since, apart from plasma-rich cells it might contain some amount of bacteria since it travels through the vagina and the vagina contains bacteria to keep itself healthy and also it produces some acidic PH, that’s how our vagina keeps itself clean from the inside. And it is due to this acid that our nice dark color panties lose their color (since the color gets bleached out) from the middle portion where it is in direct contact with our vulva, that’s due to the acidic PH in our vagina.

Therefore, when our period blood comes out it is in contact with these bacteria and the fluid, and so it might not be ideal for using period blood as a face mask. But, in most of the videos and articles I saw and read all those who have used their menstrual blood as a face mask, use menstrual cups during their period, henceforth the blood falls directly inside the cup rather than going all the way out through the vagina. So it might not contain any bacteria. But still, there is no such scientific proof of whether or not it’s ideal to use period blood on your skin as a face mask.

Where did the idea of using period blood as a face mask come from?

Well, this very topic gathered my interest when I was scrolling through my Pinterest feed. I read an article written at cosmopolitan.com about a girl trying out a very special face mask made out of her own period blood and shared the results as to how her skin looked after applying her period blood on her face.

After this, I started digging more into the subject and found a few YouTube videos as well where girls are putting period blood on their faces and sharing their views upon them, and also how amazing their skin feels after trying this out. Not only this they also talk about their womanhood and how they somehow feel more empowered and connected to their feminine power. In all the videos that I saw of the menstrual blood mask, I mostly came across women telling how they feel empowered and connect more to themselves and their womanhood, and how every girl should not be cursing their periods and not be ashamed or sad about having periods. Rather cherish them and find some ways to use their menstrual blood (since they believe it’s pure and enriched with nutrients) rather than throwing it away and being disgusted by it. I even found one article in which one lady describes a few ways that our menstrual blood can be put to use and using it as a face mask was one of them.

I want to dig out more to find the skin benefits of applying menstrual blood on your face. But, mostly everyone said that it gave them the sense of empowering themselves, and since it’s so rich in various nutrients it will do miracles for your skin blemishes and acne etc.

There were a lot of other articles about a Vampire Facial that went viral after Kim Kardashian’s selfie of getting it done, in which again the blood is used for facial but it’s not the blood we get from down below. PRP-micro needling aka vampire facial, are said to improve the production of collagen production in your skin. Collagen helps in improving many things such as hyper-pigmentation and acne scars and it also helps in tightening and smoothing the skin. Vampire facial is the process that combines the process of microneedling with platelet-rich plasma. The benefits of getting a vampire facial are still proven by some dermatologists, but I’m really not sure about the blood mask example.

Who, and from where was it initiated?

I tried hard to find the first person who actually proposed the idea of a blood mask, and what was the reason behind it. There were many articles talking about the videos on YouTube of girls trying this blood mask out and sharing their effective results. But, I couldn’t find any sort of information about the one person suggesting and initiating this whole idea of a facial mask through one’s menstrual blood.

So originally this started with a post on Facebook going viral with a bunch of girls trying some kind of substance that looked like blood, with the caption saying that they used their lady blood as a facial mask since it’s the fountain of youth, etc. This so-called “blood sister” hoax was actually a product name “The Ordinary, AHA 30% + BHA 2% peeling solution”; sold by the brand named DECIEM.

This helps in exfoliating of skin’s topmost surface for a more even and brighter surface. There are also YouTube tutorials and reviews for this very product. Now I’m not sure where all the confusion started, whether the use of the product mentioned above or the Vampire Facial led to some women trying out the period blood mask, and actually going ahead and putting their period blood on their faces, or maybe it’s another hoax for publicity.

There were also many videos in which some of the ladies used their period blood in some kind of blood moon ritual where they applied their period blood on their skin, and also some poured it into their plants as fertilizers. There are a lot of crazy things around the world that we aren’t aware of. People out there try all sorts of beauty myths. In some cases, most of the time some people are a part of a disbelief and a hoax, by just misunderstanding what someone has posted over the internet and take it in a totally different way, without even doing the research once, of whether or not the things they just saw on the internet are even real or not?

I would personally suggest going and researching before you believe in something shared over social media. Do your part of the research and be aware of what’s the reason or science behind something, and then make a choice. But, still, at the end of the day, it’s your choice entirely, after all, it’s your body and you are the owner of yourself. If you feel empowered and connected more towards your womanhood by applying your period blood on your face, then no one is stopping you. But if you’re applying it just cuz someone else is doing it to get better skin doesn’t mean you’ll get the same results, of a blemish-free younger-looking skin then you might want to know the facts behind it.

There are no such proven facts behind the period blood being an efficient substance for your skin problems. You might or might not get bright and younger-looking skin. So, don’t be a part of a hoax or just a misunderstanding and go on trying such things. That’s what my personal opinion is over this very subject that held me for a couple of weeks digging and researching the whole idea to the core so that I’m not the one spreading a mis-word among my audience.

That’s all about this crazy topic I came across, over which I already puked my coffee out of my mouth when I first read about it, LOLz….. :D. I’m sure most of you will resonate with this when you read this. Stay tuned with Soodin Skincare for more such interesting value added information around the skincare industry.
